The problem isn't that there were a lot of them, but the fact that people 
want MINT versions of them. There aren't that many in the U.S. Japanese 
collectors have snatched them up. You can find user M3s for reasonable 
prices. It's the MINT ones that are expensive.

And technically, none of them are new because only Leica can sell them 
new, or a dealer who has had it on their shelf this long for sale. If 
someone bought it, and put it in a safe deposit box unopened, that's still 
not considered new.
