Absolutely correct.  I am forced to use the 35-70 "N" design for action
work and it is only possible with polarizer by removing the lens hood,
holding onto the polarizing filter and using AF.  An absolute pain. 
Without AF, would be impossible to use.  Fortunately, the later model
(german) f/3.4 lens is pretty good, slightly better contrast and color
saturation, the creamy smoothness of Leica and almost as sharp as the
"N" equivalent, but doesn't focus particularily close.
