Michael,

Edwal used to make a chemical called 'Hypo-Check' that could test whether
your fixer had become loaded with silver. I bought two bottles about 20
years ago, and still have a dab left! It lasts forever!
Another tip, and one I recommend if you want anything near archival
permanence, is to use the two solution fixing method.
When you start a session of developing or printing, use one solution for the
recommended time, and a second solution for half the recommended time. When
the first solution tests as exhausted, discard it, and you make the second
solution your first solution. Make a fresh batch of fixer for the second
solution.
This method of fixing, and proper washing will assure you of prints that
will not develop a nasty yellow stain many years from now!
Cheers,
Dan'l
