None of the R's were "made in Japan", though components were manufactured
by Minolta and its sub-contractors and shipped to Europe, where they were
checked and calibrated and then assembled in  Portugal.  

My Audi 4000S has a Japanese air-conditioner compressor and a number of VW
do Brazil parts in it.  It is still a German car.
