Perhaps you should consider an inexpensive (640 x 480) digital camera. 
It would allow him to work on composition, control flash and have the
advantage that he could e-mail you pictures back and forth to help
bridge that 300 mile gap.  May be a fun interactive project for you
both.

I was at CompUSA the other day and they had a Canon model for less than
$200.00.
