This is not an exact ratio, but when photographing it's very very close.

Jim is correct, but i suspect he did not type as he thought. The depth of
field extends in an area 1/3 towards the camera and 2/3 away from the camera,
measured from the point of actual focus as indicated on the lens barrel. This
assumes a hell of a lot of course -- one could argue that no lens has depth of
field, just depths of acceptable focus based on circles of confusion,
enlargment size, film resolution, and so on.

But as a practical matter, it's 1/3 and 2/3, as jim said, and he just mis-
typed himself.
