Nigel,

My well used manual Nikkors are sloppy to focus and my well used Leitz M 
focus still quite tight with no apparent slop, I assume that the main reason 
lies in the choice of construction materials of the focussing helicoid threads.

The Nikkor helicoids are aluminium with shallow cut threads and the Leitz M 
helicoids appear to be brass inserts with deep cut threads.

The G2 lenses (excepting the Hologon) focus via a worm screw arrangement 
AFAIK.
