I just bought a software package call HandMail from SmatCode (see http://www.smartcodesoft.com) and it works great to send and retrieve messages. It won't work for proprietary mailing system but it works with AOL, any POP3, PPP, APOP and SMTP protocols (last 4 are flavors of TCP/IP).
