You are right.  RCA actually did the pioneering work on the CCD years before
SONY used it in the MAVICA in 1981.  There are many things American
companies like RCA, Kodak, etc. did that just never took off until someone
else sold them.  Digital cameras, video tape recorders, Color TV, Flat
Screen  Video devices, etc.

Come to think of it, in the late 70's, National Geographic was using an RCA
digital camera for underwater and night photography.  Don't even ask what
that
must have cost!!
