At EI 1600, I believe it is a reasonably close call between HP5+ and TMZ, given good technique with both. You are right that TMZ will hold more shadow detail at that speed. But frankly, I like both at that speed, and Fuji's Neopan has nice qualities at 1600 as well. The larger point is that at 1600 or below there are other reasonable alternatives to TMZ. At 3200 there really are none, but for the new Ilford Delta offering. To really exploit TMZ's wonderful potential, photographers should not be afraid to push it to 3200 (or beyond for that matter). You would hardly write a review of a Porsche 911 or a Testarossa after holding it to 55 mph.
