Paul, besides leaving the lens focus parked at infinity (or always
walking around with it parked at 10feet) try this simple "three zone"
focusing method (of course it only works with lenses that have a
focusing tab, as I recall the later 50 Summicrons do).
 Zone 1, parked to the right at infinity for the far away stuff.
 Zone 2, move it to point straight down ('bout a half inch to the left)
for all the middle range stuff (ie. your girl with the Vespa).
 Zone 3, moved fully left ('bout an inch left from zone 1) for all the
close stuff.
 Add the above to what everybody else said (ie. small apertures,
hyperfocal distances, and practice, etc) and it should work out well for
you.
