That's how the R8 works with mirror up and self-timer set. Switch the 
mirror-up lever, and then when you set the self-timer, you push the shutter 
release down all the way (just touching it only lifts the mirror, not take 
the picture) and then the mirror goes up, the timer counts down and the 
picture is taken. Of course, you have to remember to reset the mirror up 
lever, or you'll think the battery died next time you shoot with the camera 
up to your eye. :-)
