From my experience, the 40 is just a little bit wider than a 50, but not 
quite s wide as the 35. Figure using the outside of the frame line for the 50 
in your M-2 and you will be a bit under the mark, but not much, which gives 
you a good margin of error to save your butt.  It's a sweet lens.
