Richard,

It has never occurred to me that the spool has to be oriented in any
particular way. Since buying into the Leica M system last year I have shot
about 100 rolls without paying any attention to the orientation of the
spool and have never had a problem. As long as the end of the film is in
the spool, it will load fine.
