You look down the front of the elmar, rotate the aperture ring to make the
diaphragm close down...... and if you get the funny impression like, "Wow,
this is the darnedest diaphragm I've ever seen and so close to the front of
the lens....you are looking at one like mine."

Come to think of it, I've never seen anything closer.

I am informed that, conventionally, the leading element (front) is the
first element.
