I have an Epson 1200 and do my B&W printing in RGB. It takes some tweaking but
does a pretty damn nice job. No banding, but in certain light you can see
pizza-wheel tracks from the paper gripping wheels.
I think some company makes five-tones-of-gray cartridges to put in the color
cartridge slot for B&W printing too. Sounds interesting. It's not quite as good
as chemical prints, but pretty damn impressive for a $500 (US) printer.
