This giving away sales tactic really works.  When I was a young medic in
post-grad training in the early 80s, I remember a company which used to
support a research in the use of their intra-uterine contraceptive devices
by giving an unlimited number of these devices for something like 2-3
years.  I used to insert 5-6 of these things each session and after one
week was able to do it "with my eyes closed".  No prize for guessing which
of the many devices in the market  I'd prescribe today when my patients
want an IUCD inserted?

So Nikon is already resting on its laurels.  Kodak is also happily thinking
in that direction.  

Hasselblad is always strong and the mechanical aspects of their cameras and
their fine lenses has a lot to do with it.  I know a lot of pros who
started off with Bronicas and Mamiyas but lust for the day that they can
afford to work with Hasselblads. They would get rid of their Brons and
Mamiyas which subsequently have dismally poor resale value. I think it's
because people just feel more comfortable with a used Hasselblad.  Rolleis
are also great cameras with beautiful lenses but their SLR line seem to
have difficulty overtaking Hasselblad.  I have an old 6002 and it is
actually very nice to use - built in meter, motor drive, film inserts and
all in one compact body.  

Leica needs no comment.  To me, it's the chemistry that counts and
impossible to explain the working relationship.
