Yes, it focuses close. Once I tried to photograph a tiny butterfly with it, 
as the creature flitted from clover to clover, and get a big oak tree in 
the background at F/22 with ISO 100 film. (Okay, so I was desperate for a 
new angle on an weak subject to begin with!) Almost got it, but it makes a 
poor macro lens for a butterfly with only a centimeter wing span! :-)
