Thanks to those of you who have pointed me towards Nikon rangefinder info. 
There's some interesting stuff on the Nikon rangefinders - but compared to 
Leica-world it feels like a small earnest satellite colony of 
rangefinderists with only a rudimentary civilisation.  They don't seem to 
have risen above the subsistence level of talking only about cameras, 
lenses and accessories - as yet I have encountered no signs of the higher 
arts of underwear, single malts, hats, pens, watches, Landrovers or 
handkerchiefs. Though there are worrying signs of a vestigial M7 thread in 
speculation about whether Nikon will enter the Japanese rangefinder revival 
and sweep all before it with an SP successor :-)
