A modestly priced enlarger with a top notch lens is a better print maker
than a fancy enlarger with a cheap lens. The lens can always go to a
better enlarger when you can afford it ... don't skimp. Most of the less
expensive enlargers do quite well if you reinforce the vertical rail so
that the enlarging head is properly steady. It's usually a matter of
running a bit of reinforcement to the wall and bolting it in place. 

A thought: I have a Beseler 23C-IIXL which I've been storing for over a
decade for a friend of mine. It's too big for me to set up anywhere in my
apartment. I've asked several times if she wants it, but since she lives
on the east coast now and I'm in California, she keeps asking whether I
would sell it for her. I would be happy to but just can't deal with
packaging/shipping/etc.

If you're in the area and would like a nice enlarger which can handle up
to 6x9 negatives, let me know and I'll figure out a price for it. (San
Jose, California).
