(c. 1900 or so) The pioneer in this regard was the Englishman (born in Cuba) P.H.Emerson who lobbied incessantly for years that Photography should be considered Art, part and parcel of his premise was his supposition that with appropriate technique one would be able to persuade the photo to reproduce tones at different places on the sensitometry curve as one chose. Alas, H & D proved him wrong and because of that he renounced his view, and even went to the extent of publishing a public retraction of his views, brave fool indeed!
