An interesting side effect of Hurter and Driffield's work into sensitometry
was that it effectively killed off the campaign for Photography to be
considered Art! (c. 1900 or so)

The pioneer in this regard was the Englishman (born in Cuba) P.H.Emerson
who lobbied incessantly for years that Photography should be considered
Art, part and parcel of his premise was his supposition that with
appropriate technique one would be able to persuade the photo to reproduce
tones at different places on the sensitometry curve as one chose.
Alas, H & D proved him wrong and because of that he renounced his view, and
even went to the extent of publishing a public retraction of his views,
brave fool indeed!

However, by this time, some 10 years after he had started this war against
the establishment, public (and more specifically) artistic opinion had
turned, and the world went on to accept his stance, later championed by
Steiglitz in the U.S., a previous protege of Emerson's.

best regards,
Jem

Tools of the century: the H and D sensitometric analysis and the
electrical exposure meter, without these two we would be still
guessing around
