S = Series, the system in which the filters had no thread or slip over,
but are held in place with a retaining ring. It allowed you to use one set
of filter for a number of lenses with varying thread size, by purchasing
only the approriate retaining ring, a lot cheaper than owning a number of
filters in every size you required.
