hardener may also 'not' be the problem. I use it and don't have this
problem.

Make sure no hardener was used in the fix. That could be the culprit.
I use Kodak Rapid Fix A with no B. I think the B is mainly Sulfuric Acid.
I don't mind not being around that stuff and either does my prints.
