I've been going through the same learning curve (got a new M6 classic
week ago). I haven't lost a film yet, but I've had to take the baseplate
off again a few times!

The only trick is:

Once you've dropped the film in as per the diagram on the bottom, flip
open the back and ensure that the film sprockets are over the winding
cogs. Wiggle it a bit if this is not the case. Put the baseplate on and
make sure the rewind knob is turning.

M6 loading is really fast and easy once you've sussed this. (I don't
even have a problem holding the baseplate - I put it between the 3rd and
4th fingers of the hand that's also holding the camera!)

Sure is a nice camera! My old F3 is gathering some dust at the moment!
