Wasn't it a Contax standard and then a Russian standard and then a Nikon
standard first? Then (if I recall), it was later the standard on Tessars,
Minolta CL/CLE, Zone VI spotmeters, enlarging lenses, etc. The Japanese did
not make lenses with this filter size until relatively late in the game, so
did the JIS standard follow all of this?
BTW: What explains Leica's modern penchant for odd filter sizes? Monopolistic
reasons? Pre-war, I can see that they were the standard, but postwar they
seemed to have introduced some new sizes that didn't match anyone else's
filter or lens production. And Leica's current filter selection is very basic.
This is significant when you're looking at used Leitz 39mm SL filters that
run $25, when B+Ws new in most sizes run less. Even 39mm Hoyas end up in the
Leica section of the used camera shop and become more pricey than their
40.5mm counterparts. Why not something more fun like bayonet filters if
you're going to use nonstandard sizes? What small cameras need is something
like the old Rolleis had - easy to detach filters.
