Austin,
Well OK. We can keep this going.....I have found that a marine grade masking
tape adheres well enough so the nothing gets under it. But I can appreciate
what you are saying so I think a failproof method would be to mask off where
necessary with duct tape but leaving an 1/8" short of where the top plate is
to be painted and then cover that 1/8" with masking tape, for a crisp edge.
