That's a great lens -- remarkably good even into the corners, even wide open -- a lot of the performance hallmarks I associate with the current ASPH generation. Which isn't surprising, because looking at the element diagram, it seems pretty clearly to be in that optical family. I suspect that they just didn't need to cross the ASPH line to get fine performance in a lens of the 28/2.8's moderate wideness and moderate speed. Rumors aside -- have you run some light throught this lens onto film? (Having said all this, I must admit that I don't use this lens much, but that's only because it's too wide for when I want a comfy 35mm and not wide enough to seem WIDE when I want that. But that's a 28mm thing, not a this-lens thing.)
