Richard,
Your enlarging problem could be that you're letting the end of the
negative strip "fall off" the edge of the negative carrier--check to see
if you notice the problem you described only on negatives that happen to
be at the end of the negative strip. When the end of a strip in a
glassless carrier isn't supported, it curls downward and creates the
situation you describe--an even "bar" of poor focus all the way down
only one edge of the negative.

Even with a half-glass carrier (the only kind I will use for 35mm), all
four edges of the negative have to be supported by the edges of the
cutaway or insert.
