Don't know about "gems of wisdom", Tina, but I sure had a great time
yesterday with a pair of Coast Guard Dolphin HH65A helicopters. We flew
formation around Trinidad Head along the Calif North Coast. Weather was
perfect, with just a slight haze giving some nice separation of the
landscapes behind close-ups of the Dolphin. I was in the other one on a
gunner's belt, aiming Leicas out the open door and getting to act as
"director" to both crews.

I used an M6, M3 and an old SL with Telyt 280/4.8 lens. The Telyt worked
great and produced some of the best shots. I shot everything on Fuji Astia,
which does a faithful job of recording USCG international orange. I like
the Velvia for landscapes, but it makes the helicopters look like neon
signs.

The main purpose of the flight was hoist training ops, where a second
Dolphin always flies stand-by. Next week, we're planning another formation
flight over the dramatic Trinity Alps and Marble Mountains about 100 miles
inland from Eureka. I hope to have some fresh photos for a slide program at
this month's Coast Guardsman of the year program, sponsored by the Navy
League.

Want to help me, Tina, with my own couple thousand slides waiting for
sorting and filing?
