You are right, John. The question was very useful to me since I now have
a better idea of the problem and know what to expect. Looking again at
some slides, the _new_ perspective gave me a better insight of what is
going wrong.
 
So what if I bought a lemon? This is my first Leica experience, and I am
stuck with it. I already spent $180 to have the rangefinder fixed.
That's OK. I will probably have to spend $200 to fix what has to be
fixed. That's probably the cost of the camera. That's still OK. At least
I won't spend my time trying to fix it with black tape, hoping that the
problem will go away.
