This is all true, but do you know how much their stuff costs, and how often
it has to be service?

Many times I have gone out with a camera crew (on what is considered a
small-scale shoot) and our equipment, packed into one vehicle, has been
worth around $200,000. A DP who buys his own camera is going to be laying
out the same money as a small house. Not even leicas are that expensive.
