I believe it must be totally camera dependent. I have a ten year old M6 that 
feels like it takes 20 lbs. to release without a soft release, and only feels 
like 2 oz. with a soft release, (I use an old Nikon soft button). I also have 
a 1957 M3 that is totally soft just as it came from the factory. IMO if the 
release is too firm for comfort, the addition of a soft release is worth far 
beyond it's cost.
