Hi Simon,
I guess my lack of concern for weight and viewfinder intrusion is due to
my use of the lens for close to 30 years on a regular basis.

I can understand why a dealer wouldn't "loan one" for a try.  But I can
assure you that a one day try out might  deter you from buying simply
for the reasons stated by some LUG members.  It is a rather big heavy
lens for an M6, but with regular use you just becme accoustomed to
handling it.
