I was told about the 'dry' running timers in some Leicas by someone with
some experience in repairing them, and I have pulled the top and cover off
an old IIIc to see what all the 'fuss' was about- I would like to get
another to really take down, but so far it has been just a cursory
examination for me- and comparing the real thing to photos!
The mechanism looks relatively simple compared to the modern SLR, but the
LTMs are wonderful in that their simplicity means that they run a long time,
and don't seem to really 'break'- too rugged or over-engineered! They get
dirty and slow down or jam, but I have never heard of very many actually
'wearing out'!
