The two dof indicators in the viewfinder are for f5.6 and f16 with a 50mm
lens. Line up the narrow lower notch with the double image of the
rangefinder patch (when looking at point not in focus), if the two edges of
the image can be placed in the notch at the same time then it will be in
focus if the aperture is set at f5.6 The wider upper notch is for f16.

I do not have a M3 but others have posted that the complete field of view of
the finder is a good guide for the 35mm lenses. One chap recommended that
you cover the frameline illumination window to eliminate the other
framelines. Of course you have to estimate parallax correction when focusing
close.

Finally, Cosina/Voigtlander makes a brightline 75mm finder.
