No experience with the Contax,but for my money the sharpest short tele
I've ever used is Canons 85 1.2 L. for the EOS system
That having been said probably the sharpest longer lens I've ever owned
is the APO- SUMMICRON 180. Also the smoothest focusing lens without a doubt.
As for autofocus being necessary I think it has its place.I went through a
phase a few years ago when I switched from Nikon->Canon and used AF
all the time.In time the novelty wore off and I rarely use it anymore.
