We have a similar discussion (every so often) in our Leica using society
here in the UK, what constitutes a Leica photograph?

Post war, when equipment was hard to get out of Germany (the Americans were
getting nearly all of it) and expensive to import into the UK (the govt.
were trying to increase home production), there were many alternative lenses
produced.
This led to a ruling that non-Leica lenses could be used on Leica bodies and
that would still constitute a 'Leica photo'. Strange in some sense, because
the defining quality is much more likely to come through the optics rather
than the dark box which holds the film.

In terms of large format Leica. I did once have a 6x9 Leica and regret never
getting round to converting it for taking 'normal' pictures. It was a
microscope camera called a MAKAM and was available till the early 1970s I
believe. It could take sheet film or a roll film back and contained a simple
3(?) speed shutter, there was a beam splitting viewfinder too.
