with books and how do you buy your groceries with the book copies you're
paid with?"

It's not worth the time of day to have a discussion with them. If
all photographers told these people to go screw themselves, instead of
thinking it was going to be a "big publishing break!" And the 40 pounds
was a great amount of money, then the publishing house "might learn"
they can't buy pictures with lousy book copies.

Try and pay for your film and processing with the books. ;-)  Not to
forget, equipment, rent, car fuel, travel expenses, clothes, meals, and
all the other zillion things required to be a fully operational
professional photographer.
