Dan,

PS: On my M6, anyway, the base ring, when tightened, falls in exactly the
right attitude for the strap to run through smoothly, almost like somebody
designed it for this usage. Maybe I'm just lucky, 'cuz otherwise yes, the
strap might cause the ring to work loose.
