This may have been mentioned before, but for a given focus 
distance and aperture, a 35mm lens will likely give the appearance 
of greater sharpness because of its greater depth of field. 

For example, at a focus distance of 5m at f/8, a 50mm will have a 
DoF of about 6m, while the DoF of a 35mm will be (practically) 
infinite.
