On, near Tufts, pronounced one way, thw other, near the center of town, pronounced it the other.... At the time, the differentiating sound was the pronouncement of the "o",,,, either as a short "i" or the short sound "uh"..... thus the 2 accents on Medford....You buddy was from closer to the city center.....
