Does that sound like the Leica we want to hear?!
Remember they still have the aspheric grinding machine over there, that does large elements...
Another fascinating extract from the bottom of their page on projection lenses:
"ELCAN is responsible for the design and manufacture of all wide-angle and other lenses currently in use
in IMAX?, IMAX Dome? and IMAX 3D? cinematographic projection systems. Thanks to their unique,
two part configuration, IMAX? projection lenses can withstand the enormous heat generated by light
energy from large 12-15kW lamps, and the latest water-cooled 20 kW xenon lamp. This high flux is
essential to achieve on-screen brightness of 12-16 foot lamberts through 70mm, 15 perforation per frame
IMAX format. Light of this intensity passing through a conventional projection lens would cause the lens
to explode due to the high level of heat generated."
Love that "would cause the lens to explode" line! Leica could do well to use that as a logo -
"Leica: when you need non-exploding lenses"
