IMO this is NOT about the price you pay for the product but about a
manufacture's commitment to its customers. After all the manufacture is not
expected to fix the lens for free. Maybe it will cost as much to repair as its
original price but Canon removed that option from Gary. Effectively Canon
converted what was a useful object to junk.
