Steve,
Assuming you have all the necessary connections to your camera to achieve
TTL with your flash, your test would require that film is actually loaded
into the camera so that the sensor is not looking at the black pressure
plate and trying to expose it like film that is lighter in tone and thus
more reflective.  Without film the TTL system would use more power for each
"exposure", accounting easily for the difference in performance with the
Auto mode.
