This engine took about 35,000 miles of breakin to achieve peak performance, a 105 mph top end. My 300D Turbo has 276,000 miles in 15 years and it still tops out at 105 mph. At 85 mph the sound inside the car will not let any subtleties of Brubeck come through. The best analogy to music would be the final movement of Beethoven's Ninth - mechanically induced deafness with pounding musical genius. From outside a three liter turbodiesel sounds like a thrashing machine grinding rocks into sand. From inside the turbo has a loud by pleasant growl that inspires confidence that it will propel a 3000 lb car at 80 to 90 mph up and down hills, at high or low altitude, all day, all night and forever until the fuel runs out. The 300D is a blunt edged, analog and all mechanical piece of German engineering that only a Leica user (OT) can truly appreciate. Happy motoring and snaps.
