i think that xtol is the new thing. the LUG loves xtol.
according to anschell and troop's _film developing cookbook_:
XTOL is the current stat of the art in solvent developers (p.49)
XTOL is the first patended developer formula from the US kodak research
laboratories to claim a speed increase. (p.50)
fine grain and sharpness are also improved when compared with D-76 and
TMAX developers (p.50)
XTOL is now the developer most highly recommended by Kodak for T-Max films
(p.50)
and unfortunately that XTOL is "the swansong for B&W chemistry at Kodak":
XTOL is for the foreseeable future the last film developer which will be
researched with the monumental throughness that only Kodak has had the
financial and intellectural resources to achieve. (p.50)
