As for going to the beach with your Leica, the only time it would be a
problem would be if a strong wind were blowing sand around. Otherwise, no
need for paranoia. This assumes that you are not actually going to the
beach to swim and play in the sand, but just to walk and shoot. If you want
to be extra safe, just clean your lenses after you are done.
