Hi Terry,
I've never heard of nor read any specific trick or routine to re-winding and
keeping the leader out, as it's really a feel thing that comes from practice
and I've unloaded hundreds, nay thousands of rolls, usually just whipping
them right back into the cassette.

However, on the occasion where I wanted the leader out I turned the re-wind
crank carefully with a more deliberate motion to feel the tug as the leader
came free from the take up spool.

And that has always, well 90% of the time worked. ;-)

One thing you might try is, when you load the film make two small crimps in
the end of the leader as shown ___/\_/\_ and insert these into the take-up
spool so when they come free you really know you've just pulled free of the
spool.

In my M6's I crimp every roll before loading as it helps ensure the leader
catches when you are loading in a hurry.

I'm sure there will be any number of suggestions and possibly an "official
how to unload and leave leader out" over the next few days.
