Subject: [Leica] M6 metering question

The meter on my M6 stopped working (it said the image was always underexposed).
I just assumed that this was a dead battery and replaced the battery. Same thing.
I suppose of course that the replacement battery could be bad, too (it came from
Radio Shack and I bought it at least a year ago). Is this failure mode of the
metering system something that happens?

Also: how on earth am I supposed to get the battery cover off without scratching it?
I finally used some Silly Putty to get a grip on it, but I didn't think of that
until I'd tried several other techniques, none of which worked.

And what's the best way to touch up scratches in that paint? Ordinary black
spraypaint? $200/bottle Leica-branded spraypaint? Black nail polish?
