David,

I bought a scanner 2-years ago to save processing costs. I've scanned about
400 rolls of color neg film in 2 years -- plus numerous slides and b/w negs.
I don't know what I've saved in processing, but I know I've paid for my
scanner several times over based on that alone. My $700 scanner is still
plugging away. If you have a decent computer, a scanner may be an answer.

There's a time factor and a learning curve (for consistent high quality
results). Currently it takes about 30 minutes to scan a roll of film. But I
have a batch scanning workflow that takes less than 5 minutes of my time.

I scan mainly for proofing. I'll print images myself (sometimes C prints) or
take them to a custom lab. I'm shooting more slide film these days. Roughly
a 50/50 mix of slides and negs. The scanner doesn't help me save on slide
processing, but it makes it easy to generate prints from slides.

Subject: [Leica] Color Processing

Hi all,

I have recently started to shoot more color film than I have before. As I
was dropping off the rolls at a local pro-lab, I realized that I was
spending $25 per roll ($7 film (kodak portra), $18 processing), and had just
taken 3 rolls on a given Saturday. I want to continue to shoot a lot of
film, but the cost will be prohibitive.

I looked into getting just contact sheets, but that winds up more expensive
if you subsequently get more than 5 prints.

What do you folks reccomend?

Let me know,
